Putting your way to a better golf game!

John was asking if he should practice his putting. Well it’s half of the game so yes he should. Look at video for proper lenght putter. This can help your game!
The Set-Up:

Putting usually occurs on a predetermined surface called a green where the suface of the grass is cut very short to facilitate rolling  the ball toward a 4 1/2 inch diameter hole.

The Proper Club: Make sure the putter is the right length. Although it is the shortest club in the bag, it may still need to be shortened  further to adapte to your particular style.

Determining your line:

Place yourself behind the ball to determine the line that you want to hit the ball on, to get it in the hole.

The Set-Up:

The set-up incorporates the same 5 fundamentals as for a full shot.

1- Alignment: After you have determined your line, you need to align yourself accordingly:
The first thing is to align the club head in the direction of where the  ball shall travel.

2- Foot Position (Stance):
Place your feet parallel to your target line far enough apart to maintain balance with your knees slightly flexed.

Keeping your arms relaxed and hanging naturally close to the body will promote a swing that will stay longer on the target path.

         1. Hand position is too far!       2. Better hand position!

3- Ball Position:

The ball position is a personal  preference because of different  styles.

Place the ball at or slightly forward of the middle of your stance in order to let the club strike the ball at or just past the bottom of the swing arc.

4- Posture:

Flex the knees slightly with the feet comfortably apart to maintain balance.

Bend more from the upper body with the shoulders rounded being sure to keep the lower back relatively straight. The arms should  be relaxed and slightly bent as they hang naturally close to the body.

This should place your eyes almost directly over the ball.

5- The Grip:

There are different variations on holding the club. I prefer to place the club in the palm of my right hand first with my thumb on top of the grip.

I than place the palm of my left hand on the grip so that the thumb is on top of the grip and it rests against the crease of the heel pad and thumb pad of the right hand. My index finger overlaps the ring finger of my right hand.

This is called the reverse overlap grip.

Be sure to hold the putter lightly with both hands.

This will help eliminate any tension in the arms and hands.

Happy Golfing!!!

The Golf Ball – Should I play a golf ball that provides the longest distance?

John was asking me what type of ball should he use? I found a site that explains the in and out of the golf ball!

Here goes!

All players want a golf ball that performs well for their game. Playing the best performing golf ball will help you shoot your best scores. The only way to make sure you are playing the best ball for your game is to be fit for your golf ball.

What golf ball is best suited for my swing speed?

Titleist golf balls perform for all swing speeds on all shots.

Why are the scoring shots so important?

Regardless of skill level, golfers hit their driver only 14 times per round. The vast majority of shots include approach shots, pitches and chips. For example, if you shoot an average score of 85, you will likely hit 37 shots to the green but only 14 drives.

Should I play a golf ball with a lower compression if I don’t compress it like a high swing speed player?

While there is no performance benefit to choosing a specific compression, many golfers (regardless of swing speed) do have feel preferences. Golfers who prefer softer feel may prefer lower compression golf balls.

How does spin affect my game?

Spin affects each shot you play. On long shots, low spin contributes to longer, straighter distance. On short shots and chips, more spin provides stopping power to hold greens.

How important is the golf ball to my score?

Playing with the same golf ball model every round eliminates this performance variation and will help you hit more greens in regulation and hit the ball closer to the pin to convert more putts.

Proper golf alignment is one of the keys to a better golf swing.

John was asking me what I should look at first when starting the game? Keep learning every day and one thing to look at is alignment!

Golf Alignment:

Proper golf alignment is one of the keys to a better golf swing.  If you’re not properly aligned to your target, chances are the results of your shots will be off line.  Let’s look at how to line-up properly!

Make sure your club is pointing toward your target. (Use the two vertical lines on the club head to point toward your target)

Railroad Tracks:

One way of checking your alignment is to imagine a line going from your club head to your target and another line running parallel to that line representing your feet position, similar to a railroad track.

Remember, you always align your club first, placing the club on the ground and then placing your hands in the correct manner.

Aligne your club towards the target by aiming the vertical lines on the club face parallel to an intermediate object a few feet from your club which is in line with the target. This can be a twig, a blade of grass or a divot etc.

Checking your alignment:

1. Place your feet in a position you feel is parallel to the target line then…

2- Place another club on the ground touching the toes of both feet.

3- Step back and look where the club is pointing. If the club is pointing parallel to your target line, you are properly aligned, otherwise make the necessary adjustment.

4- If your shots are offline, your fist step in correcting the problem is to verify your alignment as indicated above!

Proposed Ban of Anchored Putting

PGA Tour Made the Right Decision in Opposing the USGA’s Proposed Ban of Anchored Putting

This is a article from Chris King, I had to send this out, I use this type of putter and would not like to see this putter become illegal.

golf_anchored1

The PGA Tour has announced its opposition to the USGA and R&A’s ban on anchored putting strokes, a position that has outraged some of the game’s traditionalists.
Make no mistake, the Tour, along with the PGA of America and the National Golf Course Owners Association, made the right decision in their opposition to the ban.
Forms of anchoring have been around for decades and no great harm has come to the game. Nor will it going forward.
If the USGA and R&A were so offended by an anchored putting stroke, they should’ve acted years ago.
The hybrid putting stroke wasn’t a problem until Ernie Els used it to win the British Open and Webb Simpson anchored his way to the U.S. Open championship. At that point it became more than the game’s superiors could stand.
If the USGA and R&A have evidence that anchoring makes the game fundamentally easier, they should present it. The vast majority will then oppose anchored strokes the way they do the Polara golf ball.
That evidence has yet to emerge, and I’m not holding my breath awaiting its arrival. Neither should you.
This isn’t about “cheating,” it’s about perception and a pair of organizations that embrace new trends about as readily as North Korea. The proposed ban has its roots in the same type of decision making that got Michael Jordan banned from a private course for wearing cargo shorts.
Jordan didn’t wear proper golf apparel. Anchored putting isn’t a real stroke.
Get real.
All that aside, the plight of professional golfers shouldn’t be the concern, in this case, of a pair of organizations that are at least superficially interested in growing the game.
It’s the amateur player that should be the focus. Do 20 percent of players use an anchored putting stroke, as Finchem asserted? The number almost surely isn’t that high, but what if it’s 7 percent?
A struggling industry shouldn’t risk alienating a not-so-insignificant portion of its customer base over a “stroke” that has yet to harm the game, despite a few anguished cries.
If the ban causes anyone to leave the game or play less (and I believe it will), golf’s governing bodies are committing a crime against the game they are entrusted to protect.

Is it Legal to Play Golf with a Range Finder?

John was asking if is legal to play golf with a Range Finder?  Well John, yes it is and can possibly help you score better by knowing the exact yardage during play of a hole. Amateur golfers have turned to specialized rangefinders to improve their skills over the last decade. Rangefinders were originally developed for the construction industry, but they have since crossed over due to the prevalence of golf as a global hobby.

Yes it is Legal to Utilize a Golf Range Finder

Well based on the USPGA Rules of Golf you can, I checked out this question on their website “are golf laser rangefinders legal in tournament play?” and the answer I found was: “Yes, providing any local Committee (i.e. the committee accountable for an individual competition, golf course, the Rules of Golf Committee, etc. ) Has in place local guidelines that permit the usage of laser rangefinders to assist the golf player estimate distances.”

Take Note: the use of equipment that assesses any additional information over and above displaying the distance, i.e. measure some other conditions which may have an effect on a player’s play (e.g. wind, gradient, temperature, etc.) are certainly not legal, in the event that these kinds of capabilities are installed they can’t be used, but the device will still be illegal. A range finder used in competitions can only display distance and offer no other assistance.

Always check with officials to see if your range finder is
permitted before you play in tournaments.

So we have discovered that it can be legitimate to make use of golf range finders, simply make certain that in the event you intend to use one during tournament play choose a basic unit that does not possess all the functions that the USPGA consider as illegitimate, and only measures distance, you have been warned!

Have a look at this interesting video about the technology of the Range Finder:
